How to Wear a Kilt in 10 Easy Steps
- Pleats in back. The pleats go in the back; the flat aprons go in the front.
- Inner apron first. Fasten the inner apron first, then the outer apron.
- Height. The top of the kilt sits at or just above your navel.
- Length. The hem hits the middle or top of your kneecap.
- Kilt pin. Pin the outer apron only, near the bottom corner on the fringed side. Never pin through both aprons.
- Sporran. Hang it about a hand’s width below the belt buckle, centered.
- Hose and flashes. Fold the hose down below the knee, with the flashes on the outside of each leg.
- Sgian dubh (optional). It goes in the right sock (left if you’re left-handed). Check venue rules first.
- Ghillie brogues. Cross the laces, twist, wrap around the ankle and tie.
- Jacket. Prince Charlie jacket for formal and evening wear; Argyll jacket for daytime.
